What exactly is surface weight?
We keep talking about fabric weight, and you will also find it listed for our products:
• DIDYMOS baby wrap
• DidyTai
• DidySling
But what is it, exactly?
Fabric weight is simply a measure of how much one square metre of cloth weighs. It gives a rough idea of the thickness of a fabric. As a general rule, the higher the fabric weight, the heavier the wrap. In practice, the weave and the blend of materials also affect how a baby wrap ties and feels.
Which fabric weight is right for a wrap is judged very differently from person to person. Opinions differ especially when carrying bigger children, on whether heavier or lighter wraps are preferable. Wraps under 190 g/m² are considered very light, an all-round weight is about 200 to 240 g/m², a medium weight is 250 to 260 g/m², and anything above that is heavy. A wrap above 300 g/m² is considered very heavy.
Feeling confused?
If you are new to babywearing, a fabric weight between 190 and 250 g/m² is a good choice.
